Just as life has changed with each generation so has the game of life board game. Well almost. The original version of this game came out in the 1860s and was called the Checked Game of Life. It was extremely popular at first, but, later its popularity waned. Then came the 1960s and the new Game of Life. This game took players through choosing to go into business or college and then along the way there were jobs, marriage, kids, rewards and failures and at the end you either ended up in the poor house or as a tycoon. Not exactly real life but it’s close enough to keep it interesting.
Today’s Game of Life includes some of the elements of this older game and many changes. For example you can get rich suing your neighbor or spend some of your hard earned money on cosmetic surgery. You can incur debt from your college loans only to end up being unemployed. You can still get married and have kids but, not necessarily in that order.
Many people who loved the 1960s version of this game are less fond of this new version. However, it does in many aspects reflect the modern day life even if we don’t like the parts it depicts. The board is more three dimensional than the older version, which should make the game more interesting but, in reality at least for some people it takes so long to set up that they end up choosing other games where start of play is quicker.

Despite the numerous complaints about this newer version of the Game of Life plenty of people still like it and it is popular enough that there are several other versions of this game including a Simpson version, 50th anniversary edition and a Game of Life: Twists and turns version.
For those who find the newer version of the Game of Life less than fun, The Redneck life version may well add the fun dimension back into the Game of Life. Redneck Life seems to be a cross between the Game of Life and the old Mad Magazine game. The goal of Redneck life is not to finish the game with the most money but rather to finish with the most teeth. It’s a hilarious version where competitors mortgage their trailers, collect old vehicles, have kids and lose teeth along the way. While it won’t imitate your average middle class family it will bring about a laughing good time.
Whether you choose the Game of Life or one of the many spin offs of this game it is still a great way to spend time with family and friends and can open discussions for family members about specific values, events and dealing with the various problems one has in life. It is good clean fun family entertainment as well as providing an opportunity for real life discussions in a more relaxed atmosphere.
Best of all the Game of life can provide an escape for an hour or two from real life and give families an opportunity to spend time together in a fun way.
