Risk Board Game

risk board gameThe Risk board game is for 2 to 6 players and was invented by French Film director Albert Lanorisse, manufactured by Parker Brothers and first released in 1957. It is a game of strategy and chance and the original version saw the winner of the game dominating the entire world.

The stated playing time for the game is 1-6 hours with average games running between 3-5 hours while games played by avid experienced players can last more than a day. During the 1970s it was the game of choice for many college students whose limited income did not allow for the normal movie going or bar hopping. Friends would often gather on Friday night playing the game into the wee hours of the morning. During game play even the closest friends would become bitter enemies rolling the dice and seeking to conquer one another’s countries.

While the basics of this board game is quite easy to learn, developing strategy can often take months and even years of serious play. When all is said and done there is nothing simple about this game unless you choose it to be. Game play can include two or more players ganging up on one player to wipe their armies from the board only to discover a few plays later that those same allies have now become your enemy.

Over the years the game has changed, incorporating newer looking boards and more intricate designed pieces and it’s continued popularity can be seen in the number of new versions that have hit the market. Besides the original game of risk, players can now travel into the future and wage war against enemies from other planets and times with the Star Wars or the 2210 A.D. Version. You can also play the Risk Storm God version or travel to middle earth and join the hobbits in the Lord of Rings version of Risk.

No matter which version of this game you choose, there is nothing quite like gathering a group of friends together on a rainy weekend afternoon or evening and setting out a few snacks and drinks. Then for the course of a few hours becoming a general leading your armies into battle where the single roll of the dice or the right move can make you king of the world.

Risk is not a game for very young children though children as young as 8 can quickly learn the rudiments of the game and it is both fun and interesting to learn how their strategic skills improve over time as they get older and better at thinking several moves ahead.

One of the things that keeps Risk interesting is that the success of your attack on another army can depend on a simple roll of the dice making every play a little more exciting. While having a good strategy is essential to winning the game it isn’t everything and even the worst player has a fighting chance if luck happens to be on his side.
