One of the top-selling toys in online sites and toy stores is the Uno card game, which is a good match since the name itself means “one” in Italian and Spanish. It was developed by Merle Robbins in Cincinnati in 1971 and it has gone through numerous evolutions since then. Despite such changes, fortunately, Uno is still a fast-paced game of skill suitable for all ages and for groups of up to 10 players.
How to Play
Knowing the rules of Uno is relatively easy but the challenge of the game becomes evident as its progresses. Players only need card tables and chairs, pencils and paper, and the Uno card deck to start playing. Or better still, in the absence of tables and chairs, the group can play on the floor.
Each deck consists of 108 cards with 4 suits, word cards and wild cards. To start the Uno card game, the dealer gives each player 7 cards and then places the remaining cards on the table’s middle to serve as the draw pile. The top card from the draw pile is turned over and becomes the discard pile.
The person on the dealer’s left begins the game and other players take turns, with the order moving in a clockwise direction. When it is your turn to play, place one card on the discard pile with the former bearing the same color, number and words as that on the latter. Or else, it will be considered a wild card.

If you cannot discard, then you must draw a card and then play it. But if you still cannot, then the next player takes a turn. You must announce a suit when a wild card is placed on the discard pile.
If a word card is placed on the discard pile by the preceding player, then you have to follow the directions stated. Some directions are to your disadvantage as you may be made to draw 2 or 4 cards as well as skip a turn. These steps mean that you are closer to losing at the Uno card game.
You must also say “Uno” when you have one card left in your hand otherwise you have to draw 2 more cards when another player catches you out. When one player is finally out of cards, you must tally the points and whoever has the highest number wins the game.
We have to emphasize that the outcome of the game almost always changes with each turn. In fact, very little literature has been published on how to win at the Uno game in a consistent manner.
What to Choose
Depending on your perspective, the Uno card game has fortunately or unfortunately spawned many variations. This way, if you get tired of the same cards being played ad infinitum, you can choose another variant such as:
- Batman Uno with its Joker feature
- Betty Boop Uno with the Swapping Cards
- Care Bears Uno offers the care-a-lot card
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid Uno features the Cheese Touch Card
- Disney Princess Uno with the added Dragon Card
